Trump Posts False Claims about Climate Change

Action Date: 01/23/2026

Explanation: Bias and Misrepresentation
Scientists Affected: Climate
Agency(s):
Federal → White House
Presidential Administration: Trump Administration (Second)

On January 23, 2026, President Trump posted false claims about climate change on social media. In the post, he said that a “Record Cold Wave [was] expected to hit 40 States. Rarely seen anything like it before.” According to Victor Gensini, a meteorology professor at Northern Illinois University, “Truly historic cold waves, like those in 1978–79, 1983–85, or earlier decades, were often colder and more persistent over large regions… winters overall are warmer than they were several decades ago.”

Trump also posted, “Could the Environmental Insurrectionists please explain — WHATEVER HAPPENED TO GLOBAL WARMING???” In response, climate researchers noted that winter and cold temperatures continue to occur even in a warming world, that no one has suggested otherwise, and that daily weather patterns are not the same as long-term, global climate change.
