The Trump administration’s proposed budget for fiscal year (FY) 2027 calls for reducing the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) budget to $18.8 billion, a 23% cut compared to FY2026 levels.
The budget proposes to cut 47% from NASA’s science mission directorate, which oversees dozens of active space missions and research initiatives. The Mars Sample Return mission, aimed at bringing previously collected rocks back to Earth for study, and the SERVIR Global Collaborative, which distributes NASA satellite data to help global communities manage climate risks, are both specifically targeted for elimination in the proposal.
The budget also proposes cutting $1.1 billion from the International Space Station, cutting $297 from technology development, and entirely eliminating NASA’s Office of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) Engagement.
