Action Date: 04/03/2026

Explanation: Budget Cuts
Scientists Affected: Climate
Agency(s):
Federal → DOE
Federal → OMB
Presidential Administration: Trump Administration (Second)

The Trump administration’s proposed budget for fiscal year (FY) 2027 calls for a roughly 10% increase in overall funding for the Department of Energy (DOE), but proposes a $1.1 billion cut to the agency’s Office of Science.

The proposal also calls for shifting Office of Science resources from climate change research to artificial intelligence (AI) and biotechnology, and for pulling the U.S. out of an international coalition developing an experimental fusion reactor, redirecting those funds to domestic nuclear fusion research.

The proposal also includes a government-wide ban on using federal funds to subscribe to or publish in academic journals.
